Let’s Have a Toast to Falling Short

You tried something. You failed. You wasted your time. You suck.

Great, now go do it again. Stumble and fall – screw up – learn from your mistakes – pick yourself up and do it better next time.

The only trying that’s worth trying is trying that leads to doing. As a wise Jedi master once said, “Do or do not, there is no try”. Yoda speaketh the truth.

If you’re trying something for the sake of trying it – rethink why you’re trying. Don’t focus on the “what” – focus on the “why”.

Today #reverb10 asks us what we’re going to “try” in 2011. I’m asking you, “what are you going to DO in 2010”? A much better question, in my opinion.

What’s stopping you? What are you waiting for? Today – seriously – TODAY, challenge yourself to do something new. Do something spontaneous and out of the ordinary. Start a blog, call an old friend and set up a time to grab beers, get in the car and drive somewhere – anywhere, spend the day sending out hand-written Christmas cards to the people who matter, eat Sushi for the first time, finalize the resignation letter that’s been sitting on your desktop and turn it in on Monday.

Big or small, do something today, and every day, that makes you feel alive. Do something to surprise yourself.

As I said in a post I wrote almost two years ago:

“The only people who never fail are the ones who never do anything. [Failure] is a part of life, it’s a part of living. It means your human. It means your growing, and odds are, eventually you’ll end up doing something pretty amazing.”

So I ask again, what are you going to DO today? What will you DO next year?
