Lauren Piro – In Her Two Shoes www.inhertwoshoes.com

Five Takeaways

  • White space is good, TOO MUCH white space, not so good.
  • If you’re at all serious about blogging, seriously consider moving to WordPress (self hosted). When you break it down, it’s only $7 or so bucks a month. WELL WORTH the investment.
  • 3 Column layout – My opinion is that it looks very “busy” and you run the risk of losing your readers focus with text on either side of your posts.
  • Spice up your email subscribe box/RSS area. If you use Feedburner – HTML-ing the subscribe box a bit is pretty darn easy. Take a few minutes to sex things up a bit – a little color and style can go a long way in drawing your reader’s eyes over to that area.
  • And lastly, put Life Without Pants on your blogroll! Seriously, come on people! :)

Thanks so much to Lauren for letting me put her on the “chopping block” – she is a great writer (be sure to check her out) and I hope this advice was useful to both her and all of you. Stay tuned for another installment of the Amazing Five Minute Blog Review…coming soon!

I think you’re on my blog roll, but I’ll double-check for you!

Thanks for the tip about the number of columns. I see a lot of three-column designs out there, and I’ve seriously considered switching. I’ve felt like I need more space for my “stuff.” But, you’re right, it’s cluttered, and I don’t need more “stuff,” so I’ve cut back. Great advice!

Three columns CAN work but there needs to be clearly defined separation – vertical lines separating the sidebar(s) from the columns, or some sort of justification. I love Lauren’s use of simple colors and white space, but there’s nothing defining where the sidebar stops and content starts. And with three columns, that can get a little confusing to the “untrained blog eye”.
