Should You Establish A Blogging Niche?

My brief blogging history

I remember my first step into the non-personal blogging scene (I don’t count my high school Xanga – but I’m at least honest enough to admit I was a part of that club). I managed a blog called “Onside Kicks” where I talked about football…and, well, that’s about it. Around the two month mark I realized no one was reading it and I had run out of things to say. I closed the door and moved on.

My second soiree into blogging had me running the aptly titled “Gradual Revolution” – this was a little more free form but I still focused predominantly on politics and sustainability. I spent a lot of time working on a design and making things look pretty, but couldn’t come up with anything to write about. The desire wasn’t there. A month later I packed up my things and closed up shop.

It took me about a year to try again. It’s funny how the blogging itch never goes away. This time, I told myself I wouldn’t worry about defining a topic. So I came up with the most random name I could think of (Life Without Pants) and starting writing. Through the past 10 months there have been ups and downs, interviews with 90′s alternative rockers, petitions to save the environment, an abundance of Social Media “wisdom”, and philosophy on life aplenty. But even with the wide range of topics, I’ve still managed to find myself a niche.

Don’t let labels define you

At the end of the day I’m going to be labeled as a “Gen Y” blog (although this is rapidly changing as of late). As hard as I may try not commit myself to one market, there’s no denying who I am, the voice I have, and the perspective on life I can share and who finds it compelling, relevant, and/or inspiring. But instead of fighting the “branding” that inevitable comes, finally, with Life Without Pants, I’ve accepted and embraced that it’s OK and natural to establish a reputation and expectation – to become “known” for something.

One of the most common obstacles bloggers are faced with is not knowing what to write about. Or knowing what to write about but losing focus or interest when your niche becomes too narrow. It’s easy to get burned out when you’re writing post after post about the wild word of scrap-booking (no offense to all the scrapbookers out there).

Write because you love to write

My advice? Stop listening to advice. Don’t let me or anyone else persuade you or tell you what you should be writing about. The fine art of blogging, at it’s core, is about putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) and writing. If you love writing, if you want to write, the rest will fall into place. It’s OK to be “that guy” – to be known for something – that’s how you grow your audience, by becoming a trusted, well respected, entertaining resource.

With time, you’ll figure out what you want to get out of your blog – and what your readers expect of you. But instead of settling in from the get-go, focus on trying new things, stepping outside the box, taking on new projects, and finding ways to involve your community. Some might stick, some might not – but there are a million ways to reinvent yourself, even in your specific niche. Your voice is the only common thread you need.

A sense of direction and a common theme is important – but don’t allow a lack of topical focus keep you from pursuing your passion for writing.

What are your blogging roots? Where did you start and how have you evolved into what you are today?

Great post Carlos – and thanks for the shout-out. We are thinking along the same wavelengths as I have a post in the works along these same lines. I gave up blogging several times before because I was opposed to focus – I thought I was becoming too specific in my topics and approach and I was afraid of ‘branding’ myself.
With Life Without Pants, a new page has been turned – I’ve accepted and welcomed the branding that inevitebly will come as a writer. What am I known for? Maybe not one thing specifically – but people have come to known what to expect when they visit my blog – whether it be thoughts on Gen Y, social media, entrepreneurship, marketing, philosophy, whatever. I’m “that guy” – But it’s OK to be that guy. It’s OK to be known for something.
But with that said – you don’t want to stop there – I am a proponent of keeping my legs moving – trying new things, reinventing myself and what I do – whether it be through writing about new topics, podcasting, video series, design work, etc. It’s that evolution that (hopefully) is keeping me interesting to all of you.
Cheers! And thanks again Carlos!

If ever there is a day to reflect on the year that was, to stop and give thanks to everyone who helped me get where I am today, Thanksgiving Day is the day to do it. There have been so many of you who are reading this that have had a huge impact on where I stand, right now. So many people who have read and watched and listed through all of the changes, challenges, and obstacles over the past 12 months.

Spend the day giving people the gratitude they deserve. Let your friends and family know how much you appreciate them. Throw out the “I love you’s” in abundance. Be grateful, reflect, drink lot’s of wine, eat lot’s of turkey, and have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

What have you learned this year? What are you most thankful for?

November 21, 2009. A brisk Saturday evening much like any other cool Chicago night. Little did I know – this seemingly harmless evening would result in something much greater, much more terrifyingly awesome, than any of us would have ever expected.

In short, my Saturday night was probably definitely better than yours.

  • Maybe it was the delicious cupcakes.
  • Or the Mongolian feast
  • Or the Yellow-skintight-turtleneck-wearing Fabio
  • Or putting my car seat back and pretending to be seven feet tall
  • Or the ice cream social
  • Or “Slap Jack”
  • Or MASHING (the teenage girl slumber party MASH)
  • Or Graphic tee, pleated khaki, one-sided-braid-sporting 50 year olds
  • Or winding up at one of the most random underground hair salon swinger parties ever

Whatever it was. There was something magical about Saturday, November 21st. On that fateful night, through all of the terrifyingly random shenanigans, I walked away with a valuable lesson:

No matter how random, scary, or ridiculous a situation may get, when you surround yourself with the right people – when you travel in good company – everything seems to work itself out. Anything is possible.

Think about Zappos. A little over 10 years ago a group of friends decided to start a business. A few friends set out to make money together, and have fun doing it. Through the years, they maintained that community spirit and committed themselves to building relationships. Back in July, Zappos sold to Amazon for over $850 million. They must have gotten something right.

They realized the power of the collective spirit. They took things in stride and made the best of every situation. They understood that having fun and loving what you do is one of, if not the most important ingredient to success.

One ridiculous night out in #DTA (downtown Aurora) taught me a lot about how I look at both personal and professional relationships. With most – I would have considered Saturday night to be a complete disaster – but with the right people, with some great friends – it was a night I’ll truly never forget.

Are you surrounding yourself with the right people?

P.S. MASH Results: I’m marrying Mari in Africa, honeymooning in Europe, and living in Naperville with our 7 kids and pet turtle. Not to mention, I drive a Corvette. Sweet.

Guest Blog Grand Tour | Life Without Pants

If you know me by now – you know that “projects” are my middle name – whether I’m compiling an ebook, recording a podcast, your reviewing blogs – I’m always up to something new, and usually these ideas come on a whim – they might start with a question or small idea, and then snowball into something much, much bigger.

Oops, I did it again.

Following in the illustrious footsteps of the strongest librarian I know, and new-found amigo, I’ve decided to take Life Without Pants on the road. Over the next two months, I’ll be embarking on a Guest Blog Grand Tour – and I want YOU to be a part of it.

What it is:

The “tour” will consist of…well…however many guest posts I can get myself signed up for. As of now, the tour has over 30 stops. Blogs from all over the spectrum, big and small, will be getting a dose of yours truly. You get a slice of brilliance, I get a two line bio, a link back to my blog, and some new friends.

Why I’m doing it:

The challenge. Honestly. I’ve established a niche here at Life Without Pants – and I love it. LOVE IT. The community I’ve invested so much time has grown exponentially in only 9 months, and will continue to grow by leaps and bounds. But while nurturing your own community is critical, expanding out and meeting new people may just be the most important thing of all.

This also give me the opportunity to write about things I normally wouldn’t. Religion, relationships, cooking, reality TV, business ethics, personal finance – you name it. Topics I may have yet to tackle here, but still have plenty to talk about.

What can I say? I’m a sucker for a good challenge.

Where you come in:

I’ve already organized 30 stops on the tour – but it doesn’t have to stop there! If you’re reading this, and you don’t see your blog on the list below, let’s do something about it. Leave a comment below or send me an email and let’s talk about what I can bring to your neighborhood.

It’s highly unlikely I’ll say no unless I literally know NOTHING about the topic – to all you underwater basket weavers out there – you’re out. Everything else is fair game.

It’s going to be a hell of a marathon – I’m excited about the opportunity to connect with so many new people – but only slightly terrified of the burnout that will undoubtedly ensue. Eye of the tiger. Eye of the tiger…

Last May was a turning point in my life. It was one of those definitive time periods when you don’t really understand WHY you have to do something, but you just know you have to do it. After months of contemplating and telling myself “no” – I finally said “yes” – I quit my job, sold almost everything I owned, and moved to Chicago with no plan. Oh, and if that wasn’t enough, I got engaged too.

Let’s face it. Change is never easy. It throws us off course and gets us out of our comfortable routine. Even a small change, like not going to Starbucks on my way to work, is easier said than done. So while all this was going on in my life last May, I turned the blog over to nearly 40 of my fellow writers – who each shared their unique perspective on the topic of “change”.

The response was overwhelming – so much so that I knew I had to figure out a way to let this incredible series of inspiration live on. Now, finally, six months later, I’m proud to introduce THE INCONVENIENCE OF CHANGE EBOOK!

What you’ll get:

  • 38 bloggers from (literally) around the world sharing their personal stories and perspective on change.
  • 74 pages of inspiration and motivation. If you’re sitting back and waiting for change to happen to you, download this ebook and learn how you can start bringing about change yourself!
  • 1 unified mission. INSPIRE CHANGE. Hear stories on how people inspired social change in their community, defied the odds and overcome great obstacles, and rejected the naysayers in pursuit of their own happiness.

It is an honor and a privilege for me to offer this to all of you 100% FREE OF CHARGE with absolutely no strings attached.

All I ask of you is if you like it – share it with others. Tweet about it, email a copy to your friends, print it out and show it to your students, peers, or colleagues, embed the above video on your own site. There are 38 voices within that need to be heard – I’m counting on you to spread the message!

A lot of time went into this and would love to hear your feedback on the ebook! Leave a comment below or contact me today and let me know what you thought!
